Election has come and gone. In any contest, someone must win or lose. A winner has been declared by the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) for the Office of the 1ST Vice President which I contested with other five (5) contestants.
Mr. J. O. Aikpokpo-Martins has been declared duly elected to occupy the said office for the next (2) years. It was a good contest, we all put in our best but that best was not good enough to return many of us as elected, except few, who were lucky to have been elected and I accept the outcome of the election with equanimity and with the spirits of sportsmanship; besides, power belongs to Allah and He alone gives to whosoever He pleases.
I appeal to my other colleagues who participated in this contest to also accept the outcome of this election, while I implore Mr. Martins to be magnanimous in victory because it is a victory to the Bar. To my teaming supporters, I appreciate you all for your unalloyed and unconditional supports from the beginning to the end of the contest. Do not be daunted, there is always another day.
My interest and burning desire to serve the Bar is not a do or die affair and if not in my capacity as the 1ST Vice President, it might be in another form. I will not hesitate to transmit my entire lofty program for the betterment of our Association to Mr. Aikpokpo-Martins to marry same with his own agenda for the Bar. Nevertheless, it is better to surpass the expected achievements in office than to be inadequate in people’s expectation.
I therefore congratulate my brother J. O Aikpokpo-Martins and I wish him a successful tenure of office.
In the same vein, I extend my congratulatory message to the President-elect: Mr. Olumide Akpata and other newly elected National Officers. I urge other contestants, who lost in this election, to join hands with the newly elected Officers, to raise the Bar to an enviable height. In any case, no system is absolutely perfect world over, since our common goal is to serve the Bar; we should all support the winners to collectively build the Bar of our dreams as against pulling down what is left of our heritage.
