The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), aka Unity, Abuja branch said copies of the just signed “Consolidated Federal Capital Territory Courts Custodial and Non-custodial Sentencing” Practice Directions are available in both hard and soft copies for members and other lawyers in the Federal Capital Territory.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Secretary of the Unity Bar, Prince Adebisi Adetosoye and made available to Lex Community on Sunday.
According to Adetosoye, “The Chairman of the NBA Abuja (Unity Bar), Dr Hauwa Evelyn Shakarau was invited as one of the special guests of honour to witness the historic ceremony and signing of the CONSOLIDATED FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY COURTS (CUSTODIAL AND NON-CUSTODIAL SENTENCING) PRACTICE DIRECTIONS, 2020on the 2nd day of November, 2020.”
He added that;
“This is the first of its kind in the country. The Honourable Attorney General of the Federation, while delivering his address during the signing acknowledged the important role the Unity Bar will play in the implementation of the guidelines and advised that in the interest of justice, all States of the Federation should do well to have it domesticated in their respective States, as this would go a long way to enforce the regime of prison decongestion across the country.”
He said , “The Branch has made soft copies of the sentencing guidelines available and members who are interested in the hard copy can reach out to the Secretary to make arrangements on how to get one.”
