The Rape Menace: Demystifying the Key Players (A Gender Based Violence Conversation)
01 Jul 2020
Global estimates published by WHO indicate that about 1 in 3 (35%) of women worldwide have experienced Gender Based Violence (GBV), in the form of either physical, verbal, emotional, psychological and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence - including and especially rape; in their lifetime. Globally, as many as 38% of murders of women are committed by a male intimate partner. GBV can adversely impact anyone regardless of their geographical location, socio-economic background, race, religion, sexuality, or gender identity. While women and girls are the most at risk and the most affected by gender-based violence, boys, men, and sexual and gender minorities also experience gender-based violence. GBV can have serious physical, mental, economic, and social repercussions. There's been a pandemic of rape cases in recent times, and it is therefore imperative to address critical issues in this regard as there is evidence that advocacy and empowerment interventions are promising in preventing or reducing GBV. This Conversation is therefore aimed to address the issue of rape, its causes, consequences and victim shaming; as well as consider the roles we all play as citizens in promoting or stopping the tide, whilst looking critically at its impact on the victims and the society at large in the short, medium to long term. This is with a view to ensuring that responsibility and culpability are properly adjudged and allocated for justice and societal good. The "Gender Based Violence - Africa" Project is an initiative of *iSpace Foundation*, [an innovation hub in Accra, Ghana which seeks to educate as well as create awareness about gender issues]. The GBV Africa Project aims to assist Civil Society Organisations to fight Gender based issues in several parts of Africa through: 1. Capacity building, 2. Enabling access to technology; and 3. Facilitating networking with start ups that have ideas to curb GBV.
