The 2020 New Yam festival celebrated by the Igbos in Kano State will not hold. This following a court order by a Kano State High court presiding over the Leadership Tussle of the Igbos in Kano between Ma’azi Ikechukwu Oliver Akpudo and Ichie Boniface Ibekwe.
The festival which was scheduled to hold on Sunday, September 27, was stopped by security officials from taking place following the court order. The Court said the suspension of the new yam festival is to determine who the authentic Igbo traditional ruler in Kano.
Justice Farouk Lawan Adamu who issued the order also retrained one Ikechukwu Oliver Akpudo from organising and celebrating any festival that had to do with Igbos living in Kano. The court took the decision following a suit to determine who is the authentic traditional ruler of the Indigbo in Kano state.
The judge asked the Kano state commissioner of police, Habu Sani to ensure that the order is adhered to.
