The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) said it is ready to start offering free Mediation Services for poor people by February this year.

ICMC Chairperson Abuja Chapter, Ambassador Rosemary Chikwendu disclosed this in an exclusive Interview with our Correspondent on Wednesday in Abuja shortly after a dinner for the new ICMC national executives.

The free mediation service also known as the “ICMC volunteer mediation scheme” is one of the co-mandates the new ICMC executives hope to execute while in office.

According to Ambassador Chikwendu, beneficiaries for the free Mediation services need to be qualified. “It is for the poor…” Ambassador Chikwendu said.

“It is path to providing justice for the poor in a quick, cheap and amicable manner.” She added.

She believes this would increase the number of resolved conflicts and pave ways for lasting peace in the country.

“….We already have a mediation centre running and we have our members who have volunteered to seat at the mediation centre, …we already have it going.…we expect the new national exco to engage us more in what they do and the national president promised to do that….” Ambassador Chikwendu said.

She added that conflict resolution is the fastest way to achieve peace, and therefore called on the government to explore the services of Mediators to achieve lasting peace in the country.

For his part, newly elected National president of the ICMC Dr. Agada Elachi shares a similar thought. He believes Nigeria requires a plethora of mediation Services.

In his words; “As we all know there is a lot of problem in Nigeria, and there are no enough people to help or assist, one of the things that we hope ICMC will do during our tenure is to provide a body of mediators who will volunteer to offer their services for free, by assisting members of the public… resolve issues they cannot resolve within themselves….we hope this will bring lasting peace in the Nigerian Society….”

The ICMC new exco will run a single tenure of three years.
